REACH TO TEACH PROGRAM
Reach to Teach--Immersed in the Arts is a unique, “out-of-the-box” program created not only to make the arts accessible, but to also allow children from different backgrounds to get to know each other and make connections. Linda Shirley created the program in response to a Vancouver teacher's plea for art supplies for her classroom. Linda thought that they could do better than simply providing a donation, and came up with the idea to offer classes instead.
Supported through a collaboration between The Arts Connection and the Richmond Arts Council, Reach to Teach pairs an underserved downtown Vancouver school with a Richmond school and brings them to The Arts Connection for a day of intense arts education once a month for a semester. After the final session, The Arts Connection hosts a banquet where students get to celebrate their work and show it to various community leaders. This year, students have enjoyed theatre, hip hop dance, and visual art lessons.
Our current partner schools are Admiral Seymour Elementary in Vancouver and Westwind Elementary in Richmond.
